AISC Releases Updated Structural Stainless Steel Standards (ANSI/AISC 370-25 and ANSI/AISC 313-25)

11 August 2026

If you design with structural stainless steel, this is essential reading.

The newly released AISC 370-25 Specification for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings and AISC 313-25 Code of Standard Practice for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings introduce significant updates that will improve design consistency, fabrication practices, and alignment with the latest carbon steel standards.

The revisions include enhanced alloy specification provisions, new flexural design requirements, updates to stainless steel bolt shear strength, and standardized terminology and fabrication practices.

NEW – AISC 370-25 Specification for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings
* Improvements to the provisions for specifying alloys,
* New flexural design requirements for singly symmetric I-shaped members and single angles, and
* New updates to the determination of shear strength of stainless steel bolts.

NEW – AISC 313-25 Code of Standard Practice for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings
* Provides a clear and consistent set of requirements for backoff and runoff tabs and standardizes terminology to match AISC 370.

“The 2025 stainless standards represent a big step forward from their first editions. The committee worked hard to bring these updates forward on a short cycle as AISC continues to respond to the growing needs of the construction community to have the best information available in the area of structural stainless steel,” says Mark Holland, chair of the AISC Committee on Structural Stainless Steel for the 2021 and 2025 development cycles.

The updates ensure alignment with the 2022 standards for carbon steel (ANSI/AISC 360-22 and ANSI/AISC 303-22) while addressing the unique characteristics of stainless steel.

These are important developments for structural engineers, fabricators, architects, and anyone involved in stainless steel construction.
The standards are available as a free download from AISC.
