NZSSDA awards at Metals Industry Awards Gala Dinner, 15 September

At the Conference Gala Dinner the NZSSDA presented two Stainless Steel Awards, one for Excellence employing stainless steel, and the other for Innovation in Stainless Steel design, on projects carried out in 2017 (more below).

At the Gala Dinner, the following member companies received two NZSSDA Awards for stainless steel fabrications in 2017:

1) Excellence Award – Rivet Engineering Ltd, New Plymouth.

Recently Howard Tuffery’s latest sculpture “Light of the Land” was unveiled on the Taranaki Walkway in New Plymouth. The stunning stainless steel artwork was a gift to the city by American Nancy Mills.

Made from 1.5mm thick 316L stainless steel sheet the gleaming sculpture was fabricated by Rivet Engineering Ltd. The sculpture’s skin of stainless steel is mirror-polished and it reflects activities around the artwork.

Viewed from the distance it displays a kinetic aspect as walkers and cyclists move past. Being positioned on the foreshore it also reflects the sea on one side and at night it takes on another life again, reflecting lights.

As the sky meets the sea and the land across the entire sculpture it reminds us that although an Island we are connected to the world.

2) Innovation Award – FGS Group Ltd & CMR Engineers Ltd, Auckland.

A unique indoor swimming pool structure involves an automated moveable deck that retracts over a 12 metre by 5 metre swimming pool. When the pool is not in use the retractable deck covers the entire pool and the stone tile cladding matches the surrounding patio area to completely conceal the indoor pool.

The high strength grade 2205 duplex stainless steel was used for the laser-fusion welded structural sections, manufactured by Montanstahl through their NZ agent Vulcan Steel. The automation and the critical safety equipment for this novel swimming pool structure are located in a control box in the plant room which interfaces with the home security system.

Fabrication of the entire stainless steel pool structure was by FGS Ltd and the design engineer for this innovative swimming pool project was CMR Engineers Ltd.
