NZSSDA at Metals Industry Conference, Christchurch, 15 September

The biennial Metals Industry Conference was held at the Addington Raceway & Events Centre in Christchurch on the 15th September, with warm sunny weather to welcome delegates to the rebuilt city.  The event was organised by HERA. NZSSDA was one of a number of the metal-based NZ organisations participating at the conference in 2017.

NZSSDA played a lead role at the Conference, with a Plenary lecture given by Steve Scott, NZSSDA Chair. Steve described in detail the construction of the Len Lye Centre project in New Plymouth and some of the clever solutions his team innovated for the Centre's stainless steel cladding.

In the afternoon there was a half-day NZSSDA Seminar which was followed by the AGM.

Another speaker at the Seminar was Mr Kenny Lim, Stainless Structurals Asia P/L, Singapore, who talked on Fusion-Welded Stainless Steel Structurals.

Les Boulton, NZ Nickel Institute Consultant, gave a presentation entitled Structural Stainless Steels – New Applications.

The Seminar speakers described various recent applications of nickel-stainless steels in Architecture, Building, Construction and Tunnels. The seminar content was very relevant in the post-earthquake re-build of Christchurch city.

There was a good audience present throughout the afternoon at the NZSSDA Seminar. About 50 Nickel Institute publications were put on display and the publications were all taken by attendees at the end of the Seminar.

Steve Scott was re-elected NZSSDA Chair for 2018, Paul Gapper is deputy-Chair, and Holger Heizel (NZWC) is NZSSDA Secretary. Overall, the participation of NZSSDA at this year’s Metals Conference was successful. The application of stainless steels in structural applications for new constructions was well publicised to the conference attendees.
