Dispatch & Garlick Ltd is an independent company of engineers, merchants and foundrymen in Greymouth. Established in 1873 as the Dispatch Foundry to service the mining industry of the West Coast, the company grew to be recognised throughout the country for its log haulers, pressure vessels and various other products. The company was acquired by R A Garlick Ltd in 1995 and the amalgamation has combined a wealth of experience in heavy engineering to the gold and coal mining, logging and sawmilling, dredging, cement, railways, marine, fishing and dairy industries.
The company currently employs a staff of about 50 in the various facets of engineering which include a foundry with a 500kg electric induction furnace for grey, alloy and spheroidal graphite irons a well equipped and staffed pattern shop a boiler shop for plate, structural work, pressure vessels to all codes and classes and hot formed product. Radiography equipment in house, Q.A. system installed and in the process of certification, a fitting and machine shop with machining capacity for face plate work up to 3.6m diameter, for shaft work up to 6m long with CNC turning 3m centres 600diameteroverbed and with a 400 tonne shaft press. A motor shop for engine rebuilding and a CAD design and draughting office. The main workshop, which has a private railway siding, comprises two bays 95m long, each serviced by a 10 tonne overhead travelling crane.
The company is active in mechanical contracting and repair work for the marine, mining and timber industries and has the ability to design and build such items as heat exchangers, overhead cranes, hoisting winches, barges, sawmill machinery and skyline log haulers. The company specialises in the design and construction of pressure vessels for all gases and refrigerants, complete package rotary dairy platforms and sheds, hot formed dished ends, trawl equipment for deep sea vessels and marine repair work.
